Dexter in the Dark by Jeff Lindsay My rating: 4 of 5 stars So I’ve been miserably ill with a dislocated neck this past week. It’s been causing the kind of constant and persistent headache that makes it impossible to do anything useful. I can’t write, I can’t edit, and I sure as hell don’t […]
Read More Book Review: Dexter in the Dark by Jeff LindsayFire & Blood by George R.R. Martin My rating: 5 of 5 stars Eager for all things Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire, I asked for this book for a Yuletide gift. My kids got it for me for Mother’s Day. They’re good kids (adult kids, now; older than I’d like […]
Read More Book Review: Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin @GRRMSpeakingShadow of Victory by David Weber My rating: 4 of 5 stars This book is not about Honor Harrington. It’s not about Aivars Terekhov. It’s not even about Mike Henke or either of the series’ Zilwickis. This book is about Sinead Terekhov. It’s about Grezegorz Zielinski and Tomasz Szponder. It’s about Adam Siml and Zdenek […]
Read More Book Review: Shadow of Victory by David WeberRiders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey My rating: 4 of 5 stars No one would ever publish this book, were it written today. It’s full of purple prose and repetition, heaving bosoms and moustache-twirling bad guys, and it’s considered a foundational book of the Western genre, and established maybe 75% of the tropes, […]
Read More Book Review: Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane GreyJem by Frederik Pohl My rating: 4 of 5 stars Read for the Science Fiction Masterworks Book Club. This book was absorbing, interesting, and kept me picking it up to see what would happen next. It was also joyless, cynical, and depressing in a way that makes A Song of Ice and Fire seem hopeful […]
Read More Book Review: Jem: The Making of a Utopia by Frederik PohlI’m re-reading the last ten books in the Honorverse space opera series by David Weber in true chronological order. That is to say, I am reading it all as if it were one big story, not several separate books, in the order in which the events described took place (as much as possible.) I will […]
Read More A True Chronological Reading of the Last 10 Honorverse Books, Part 5 @DavidWeberBooksShadow of Freedom by David Weber My rating: 4 of 5 stars This novel has received a lot of mixed reviews. But I personally really enjoyed it! Okay, here’s the thing: if you came here looking for Honor Harrington, you’ve come barking up the wrong tree. She’s not here, man. People quote her from time […]
Read More Book Review: Shadow of Freedom by David WeberBlood Music by Greg Bear My rating: 5 of 5 stars Read for the Science Fiction Masterworks Book Club. Basic plot: mad scientist full of his own god-complex is told to shut down his experiment, but he persists anyway, and then THINGS GO HORRIBLY WRONG. Basically, it’s Frankenstein. Except that this is Frankenstein with a […]
Read More Book Review: Blood Music by Greg BearA Rising Thunder by David Weber My rating: 3 of 5 stars I’ve been trying to read the Honorverse books in chronological order. This book brings a lot of disparate storylines together. As a result, little of Honor Harrington is seen in this book, although her story is central to the action. This book is […]

This is one of the great classics of science fiction by one of the Triumvirate (the others, of course, being Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein.) In a city in the far […]
